Small Group Meeting – 19 July 2020

Thanks to those of you who were able to join today’s small group session. We went over changes on 23andMe and AncestryDNA, the data breach at GEDMatch, going through the Freedmen’s Bureau, and we reviewed documents submitted by members of the C.R.E.W.

Our next small group will be held on Sunday, August 16, 2020 at 2pm Pacific/4pm Central/5pm Eastern.

Next assignments:

  • Download the Freedmen’s Bureau Field Office guide from your state of interest. Comb through the section on the history of the bureau in that specific state. Pull out the interesting tidbits from the history. Browse through selected items on the rolls referred to that are of interest. Bring your findings back to the next small group meeting.
  • What aspects of the Freedmen’s Bureau keep you from using it as a go-to record set? What would help you to re-visit it? Leave that feedback as a comment below.
  • Revisit a document that intrigues you or you found early in your research process. Transcribe it. Send the image to me via email at me@whoisnickasmith.com The group will weigh in with suggestions.
  • Continue review of your partner’s suggestions for your research plan and implement them. Report your findings out at the next meeting.
